About the Artist: Sturges studied at Cowles Art School Boston
and was a member of the Chicago
Society of
Etchers, the Canadian Society of Etchers, the Concord
Art Association and the American
Federation
of Arts. . His work is in the collections of the Boston
Museum of Fine Art, the Art Institute
of
Chicago, the National Gallery,
the New York
Public Library, the Toledo Museum,
the Fogg
Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum,
and the
Los Angeles Museum.
Beginning around 1910, Sturgis
devoted himself
almost exclusively to the art
of etching.
Awards from the Chicago Society
of Etchers
and the Pan Pacific Exposition
in San Francisco
in 1915 brought the artist wide
attention.
During the 1920s, he won strong
international
aclaim for both his figure studies
and landscapes,
his work was published by the
influential
Kennedy Galleries, Fifth Avenue,
New York.
All were published in editions
of 100 or
less.
