(1) "Yarns, 1930," etching, pencil signed l/r, signed/dated 1930 in the plate, l/l, numbered 6/75, 10" x 12.5" plate, 16" 19.25" frame.

Condition: Very good. Light toning.consistent with age.








(2) "Formerly of the Bench, 1932," etching, pencil signed l/r, inscribed "to Mr. and Mrs. Lord" l/l, 9 1/8" x 10 1/4" plate, 12" x 14" sheet.

Condition: Excellent.

(4) Boy Violinist, etching, pencil signed l/r, 10.25" x 12.75" sheet, unframed.

Condition: Fair to Good. A heavy crease intrudes the plate at the upper right corner and there is a cut of 1/4" in the margin above he crease. There has been a tiny paper repair in the lower right quandrant, also - observable only on close examination.






Biography: Sturges studied at Cowles Art School Boston and was a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the Canadian Society of Etchers, the Concord Art Association and the American Federation of Arts. . His work is in the collections of the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery, the New York Public Library, the Toledo Museum, the Fogg Museum, the Farnsworth Art Museum, and the Los Angeles Museum.

Beginning around 1910, Sturgis devoted himself almost exclusively to the art of etching. Awards from the Chicago Society of Etchers and the Pan Pacific Exposition in San Francisco in 1915 brought the artist wide attention. During the 1920s, he won strong international aclaim for both his figure studies and landscapes, his work was published by the influential Kennedy Galleries, Fifth Avenue, New York. All were published in editions of 100 or less.
