About the Painting: There is extensive crazing, but no lose
of paint nor apparent repair (not examined
under a black light) - otherwise very good
condition. Attractive, original gilt frame.
About the Artist: Born in 1867, Edgar Seligman was a landscape,
figure, still life and coastal
painter. Active
1911-1934, he exhibited 52 paintings
at the
Fine Art Society, London, and
two at the
Royal Academy. He has been better
remembered
for his fencing skills, having
participated
in many world class events (winning
Silver
Medals at the Olympics in 1906,
1908, and
1912). Records pertaining to
early 20th century
fencing cite his standing as
a professional
painter - "A self-portrait
by Edgar
Seligman demonstrates that the
only man to
win the British championship
at all three
weapons twice was also a talented
artist."
The artist lived in London.
