About the Painting: Excellent condition. This watercolor is in
the original frame (under the original glass).
It was re-matted about twenty-five years
ago. When acquired, it had recently been
removed from storage (a storage label was
attached), probably accounting for the fresh
color. Since re-matting, it has been hung
away from strong light to maintain the freshness
which is unique for a framed watercolor of
this age.
About the Artist: Erskine Nicol won his reputation for genré
paintings of Irish peasant life, exhibited
at the Royal Scottish Academy and Royal Academy.
As this watercolor will attest, however,
he "was a fine draughtsman, as his watercolours
reveal, often using coarse brown paper with
colour washes and white bodycolour"
