Description: Clown portrait, oil on canvas board, signed
l/l, 12" x 16" sight,
20"
x 16" framed. Inscribed verso "Painted Dec. 1964,
Photo'd Feb 1965, Varnished 3/26/66".
Condition: Excellent condition in the original frame,
which has had some wear, but
is still intact.
We believe this painting would
really sparkle
in a gold frame with a linen
liner, but we
always are reluctant to dispose
of a frame
that is original to the painting!.
Biography: Which Luigi is this? Luigi is a common first
name and clowns are a common
enough subject.
This clown is an exceptional
painting, however
- fine tonal qualities and expressive
pose,
even for a clown! Our lighting
has given
the image a bit of a "washed
out"
appearance, but in reality the
colors are
deeper, with much more color
contrast than
is evident.
The reference to photograhy,
on the back
of the painting, suggests that
this painting
was probably executed for an
illustration,
or for a print issue.
