About the Etching: Excellent condition; unsigned/unframed.
About the Artist: Painter and etcher of landscapes and genre.
Born on 7th November 1846 in Salisbury. Worked
initially in Italy and took up painting in
1870. Studied art at the R.A. Schools and
exhibited at the principal London galleries
from 1873, mainly at the R.A. Elected A.R.S.A.
1878, R.E. 1885, R.S.A. 1889. Lived in Edinburgh
for many years and died on 22nd October 1917.

Born Salisbury, he was brought up in Edinburgh
and painted scenes from Scottish history
including the Jacobite Rebellion. Also a
muralist, painting a historical cycle in
the Central Hall of the Scotish National
Portrait Gallery. A religious man, he visited
Palestine and produced a series of watercolours
depicting the Life of Christ. Hole was well
known as an etcher, reproducing the work
of the Barbizon painters and the 19th century
Dutch School. Also etched the work of John
Thomson of Duddingston (1889). Landscape
did not feature in his main work, but he
painted a number of west coast views in watercolour.

It is a fine impression, having never been
framed, typical of this artists work.
