Hastings, Howard L. (American)
19th/20th Century

Description: Horse in landscape, oil on canvas, signed l/r, 1947,  17" x 24" sight 21" by 28", framed.

Biography: Illustrator, painter, and writer working in the '20s, 30's, and 40's. He painted animals, landscape, and illustrations for books and magazines (at least two illustrations were offered for sale at Illustration House in New York). Cover art included Boys Life, April 1922; Outdoor Life, December 1930; and Field and Stream, October 1942. He illustrated four of the six 'Yank Brown' books, written by David Stone, and four volumes of The Hunniwell Boys. His writing included a children's book and Wings and Toes for Boys Life, July 1933.

We're still trying to piece together more definitive details of the artist's life. One source places his death in 1955 (Michigan State University Libraries online). A newspaper in Maryland references the name Howard L. Hastings in a 1949 obituary, but it's unclear if that was the artist's obituary or if he was listed as a survivor of the deceased. A Howard L. Hastings was interred in the Golden Gate National Cemetery and the dates of birth and death are November 11, 1892 and July 30, 1961, respectively.

A horse portrait similar in size and quality to the one listed here was recently offered by a gallery in Massachusetts for $2,700.
