About the Painting: Very good condition.
Biography: "Born in 1885 at Vienna, Austria, his
extaordinary talent for drawing and painting
was already recognized in his early youth.
Following his teachers' suggestion he attended
the Industrial School of Arts. To develop
further his painting he made for instance
travels to Italy which brought him a lot
of new ideas for his work. He exhibited in
the Viennese Glaspalast and Burggarten." - from a printed label, verso.
Note: Although signed 'Harris' and the name 'Berthold
Harris' appears on the label, verso, we believe
this to be the work of Austrian artist Hans
James Berthold, born in 1884. It was (is)
common practice for artists to use pseudonyms to enable the marketing of their work to
a variety of outlets - including art departments
of major department stores. An example of
this practice were the paintings of 'T. Bailey"
many of which were actually works by some
distinguised New England painters - including
William Paskell.
