signed monogram l/r,
4 5/8" x 6 1/4" sight, 9"
x 10.5" frame.

Additional images on request.
Condition: Excellent. New double mat and frame.
Biography: Painter, chiefly in watercolour, of landscape
and of rustic scenes in Surrey and elsewhere,
peopled with children and milkmaids; illustrator
and engraver. Born in North Shields; came
to London when he was five, and apprenticed
when about sixteen to Ebenezer Landells,
a leading wood engraver who had been a pupil
of Bewick.... About 1859 he turned to painting
chiefly in watercolours, elected Associate
of the OWS in 1860, RWS 1862; and from that
date contributed some 400 drawings to its
exhibitions. Also exhib. at the RA from 1859-81
- from The Dictionary of Victorian Painters.
Note: Without provenance, we can not expect the
market price for a watercolor by an artist
so frequently copied. We attribute this painting
to Foster and guarantee our attribution,
but the price is considerably less than a
comparable watercolor with impeccable provenance.
Myles Birket Foster was a legend in his own
time, leading many to copy his style and
sign with his monogram. We have seen many
that were obvious forgeries. Foster, himself,
compounded the problem by signing work of
students and/or other artists - presumably
as a gesture of affirmation and benevolence.
