About the Painting: Very good condition. The image above is
a bit fuzzy, but the drawing is sharp and
crisp with very good color. Original frame and glass; new matting.
About the Artist: Painter of landscapes, portraits and genre
in oil and watercolour, and etcher. Born
on 29th November 1874 at Holyhead, Anglesey,
the son of a Wesleyan Minister. Studied art
under Archibald Kay and Francis H. Newbery
at the Glasgow School of Art, winning a travelling
scholarship. Visited France, Italy and later
Spain. In 1895 he settled in Manchester,
moving to London in 1904. He lived at Blackheath
for many years and painted numerous local
scenes. Exhibited at the NEAC from 1904,
becoming a member in 1904 and Hon. Secretary
1919-22. Official war artist 1917-18. Elected
ARWS 1923, ARA 1927, RWS 1929 and RA 1935.
Represnted in many public collections. Died
at Blackheath on 7th March 1949. - from Dictionary of British Artists by Grant M. Waters.
Note: A label, verso, does not correspond to the
subject of this painting, so it is presumed
the frame is not original to this watercolor.
Artists commonly re-used frames from previous
exhibitions, however. The significance of
the name "Miss Balthazar" and the
numeral "73" typed on a label of
the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolour
is not known, though it might suggest the
painting was loaned for a retrospective exhibition
of the artist's work.
