The Two Bridges at Putney, Winter, oil on canvas, signed l/r and dated 1959,
20" x 30" sight, 26.5"
x 36.5"
framed.
About the Painting: Very good condition - a fine example of
the classic British tradition. The frame
is original to the painting and bears a label
with the title and the artist's address.
It's a heavy, carved frame that has been
stripped to the wood molding - giving it
a rustic appearance. It's not possible to know if this was done
before or after it was exhibited at the Royal Academy Annual Exhibition
in 1961. It bears the exhibition number "40"
and is listed by that number in the Exhibition
catalogue.
About the Artist: Cosmo Clark painted a portrait of T. E.
Lawrence (of Arabia) and achieved his greatest
success with a series of London pub paintings,
during WWII. Few of this artist's paintings
have made their way to the secondary art
market, however, so history has still to
judge the life work of this Royal Academician.
Note: Photographing this painting was a challenge!
We've avoided most of the reflections of
light, but in doing so our images are just
slightly lighter than the painting appears
in reality. The glow of the night sky and
the light reflecting on the River Thames
provides beautiful contrasts with the darkness
of the river, the shadow of docked boats,
and the embankment. There is the suggestion
of traffic on the bridges including a red
London bus. The darker color in the extreme
top right corner was apparently intended
to represent smoke (the paint is applied
a bit heavier in that corner) and there is
the suggestion of a stone wall in the lower
right corner.
