Thistles in a jug, oil on canvas, unsigned,
18" x 14" unframed.
About the Painting: Very good condition. The old stretcher bears
a stenciled number - probably affixed by
an auctioneer.
About the Artist: This painting was purchased from an English
source without attribution, but is very much
in the manner of John Bratby.
Born in London, Bratby was a painter, novelist
and teacher. He studied at Kingston School
of Art and the Royal College of Art and was
a prolific exhibitor throughout his life
- painting over 1,500 portraits alone by
1991, when the National Portrait Gallery
staged a retrospective of his work. "Bold
images, thick paint and primary colors were
Bratby's trademarks. He was elected RA in
1971." - source Buckman, Artists in Britain Since 1945.
Note: This high quality, old painting is
priced without regard to the possibility
of it being a work by John Bratby. It is,
simply, a fine painting by a British modernist.
