Condition: Very good, although there is foxing in the
left margin (see image). Not examined out
of frame. Images include light reflection.
Biography: Born Glasgow he studied at the GSA and with
Archibald Kay, moving to London in 1901,
having also trained as an architect. This
interest in architecture was soon revealed
in his powerful drawings in charcoal with
wash depicting Gothic cathedrals or Norman
doorways, executed before 1910. During the
First World War, Bone acted as an official
war artist, and his drawings and watercolours
of the Somme Battlefield executed in 1916
are amongst the most moving images of the
war. In 1917 he worked with the Grand Fleet,
and a selection of both series were subsequently
published as TheWestern Front and With the Grand Fleet. Between the wars Bone worked extensively
in Europe, visiting Spain, France, Holland
and Italy and producing not only drawings
but also etchings. During the 1939-45 war
he acted as an official War Artist. Muirhead
Bone and James McBey are amongst the finest
Scottish draughtsmen of their period. - from
