Berge, Elmer Stefan (Norwegian/American)
1892 - 1956

Indian Summer, oil on canvas, signed lower right,
24" x 30" sight, 30" x 36" frame.

About the Painting: Both the canvas and original frame are in very good condition.  The gilt on the frame has rubbed a bit, but it is still bright. Tiny spots of white paint scattered over the painting are not obvious without close examination - probably extraneous splatters from the artist's studio - and shouldn't be an issue. We can provide detail images of each spot for verification, however,.

About the Artist: Elmer Berge was a Minnesota artist of considerable reputation and we were told that this painting is representative of his best work. Berge was born July 6, 1892 on Finnoy Island, Norway. He started his art work at age 8 in Norway, and after coming to the United States attended art school in Chicago. He lived for 45 years in the Chicago and Minneapolis area.

The following e-mails were received from descendants of the artistt:

He was a US citizen living in the US for 45 years in the Chicago and Minneapolis area. He started his art work at age 8 in Norway. After coming to the US he attended art schools in the Chicago area. If you are interested, I can provide additional information to you. Our family has many of his paintings. Regards," (Name Withheld).

"I have just bought a picture of mr.Berge. He was my fathers uncle. He died under his exhibition in 1956. All his paintings were then "stolen" by his manager [name witheld]. I have his real voice on tape visiting norway 1955 (finnoy) and he told that he should bring about 80 paintings for the mentioned exhibition."
