Barclay, John Rankine (Scottish)
1884 - 1964

Description: Interior views of the Scottish War Memorial, Edinburgh Castle, etchings printed in blue ink, a pair, one pencil signed l/l, 11 7/8" x 5 7/8" plate, 18" x 12" mat.

Condition: The condition of both etchings is very good. Neither is "laid down". Both etchings have been archival matted and shrink wrapped since photographing.

Biography: Born Edinburgh, he studied at the Edinburgh College of Art where he met A.R. Sturrock. He was a member of the EDINBURGH GROUP, a group of progressive painters which included SPENCE SMITH, D.M. SUTHERLAND, DOROTHY JOHNSTONE and A.R. STURROCK and which was established in 1912. He painted in both oil and watercolour, frequently depicting figures in a landscape or a town setting in an individual and often experimental style. Moved to St. Ives in the late 1920s. - from The Dictionary of Scottish Painters 1600-1960.

Published accounts give his death as 1962 and err in characterizing his health during the latter years of his life. In an e-mail to us, a granddaughter confirmed his death from a heart attack in 1964. Visiting with him just three months before his death she recalls "a kind adoring grandfather, if not a little eccentric in the nicest possible way."
